This book discusses both linear economic theory and its application to China's recent economy from, 1987-2000, with an emphasis on fixed capital. It starts with the development of Marx-Sraffa linear economic models with fixed capital. The author then addresses various topics, including formal explanations of Sraffa-Okishio-Nakatani’s (SON) reduction of the whole economy to its subsystem of brand-new commodities, the renewal dynamics of fixed capital and the Marx-Engles-Ruchti-Lohmann effect as well as its extension to the accelerated depreciation case; and simulations of the economic durability of fixed capital. Further, in a general joint-production system, equilibria are computed as the spectra of the matrix pencil defining the equilibrium of the systems and the so-called Cambridge equation are extended to the case of SON's economy. By simulating the case of all final products being invested for capital goods, it estimates the fixed capital coefficients from investment data on China's economy 1995-2000. Based on this, the book describes the wage-profit curves of the open China economy. By applying the estimated fixed capital coefficients, the book presents the computation of the labour values of major commodities in China, and the turnpike of the stage 1995-2000, with fixed capital. It compares the value system with the production price system, and thus points out some structural issues of China's economy that are worth discussing.

China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is intended to radically increase investment and integration along a series of land and maritime routes. As the initiative involves more than 100 countries or international organizations and huge amounts of infrastructure construction, cooperation between many different markets is essential to its success. Cheung and Hong have edited a collection of essays that, between them, examine a range of practical issues facing the BRI and how those issues are being addressed in a range of countries. Such challenges include managing financing and investment, ensuring infrastructure connectivity, and handling the necessary e-commerce and physical logistics. Emphasizing the role of Hong Kong as an intermediary and enabler in the process, this book attempts to tackle the key practical challenges facing the BRI and anticipate how these challenges will affect the initiative's further development. The year 2019 marked a number of significant anniversaries for the People’s Republic of China (PRC), each representing different ‘Chinese dreams’. There was the centennial of the May Fourth Movement – a dream of patriotism and cultural renewal. The PRC celebrated its seventieth anniversary – a dream of revolution and national strength. It was also thirty years since the student-led Protest Movement of 1989 – dreams of democracy and free expression crushed by government dreams of unity and stability. Many of these ‘dreams’ recurred in new guises in 2019. President Xi Jinping tightened his grip on power at home whilst calling for all citizens to ‘defend China’s honour abroad’. Escalating violence in Hong Kong, the ongoing suppression of Uyghurs in Xinjiang and deteriorating Sino-US relations dominated the headlines. Alongside stories about China’s advances in artificial intelligence and geneticially-modified babies, and its ambitions in the Antarctic and outer space, these issues fueled discussion about what Xi’s own ‘China Dream’ of national rejuvenation means for Chinese citizens and the rest of the world. The China Story Yearbook: Dreams reflects on these issues and more. It surveys the dreams, illusions, aspirations and nightmares that coexisted (and clashed) in 2019 in China and beyond.
